I grew up around farmland. Wide open fields, fence rows that went on forever and gates that were either rusted shut or hanging off one hinge. As kids we knew which fences you could crawl under, which ones you had to jump and which ones you didn't touch unless you wanted a jolt.
Those fences weren't there to trap anything. They kept things in order and showed what belonged where. I didn't think much about it back then. Now that we're tearing out old posts and laying out new lines on our own property, I see it a little differently.
Fence work is slow. You measure it, dig deep and set every post on purpose. Nobody's going to brag about it, but you can't run a piece of land without it. Life is the same way. Boundaries matter.
Fences protect what's worth keeping
A good fence isn't there to keep good things out. It's there to protect what's inside. When you put one up you're deciding what's worth guarding... your peace, your time, your marriage, your walk with God.
Let it go too long and things start to wander off. The lines blur, the corners get weak and eventually something you care about slips through a gap that should've been fixed a long time ago.
Proverbs 4:23 says, "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." That sounds a lot like fence work to me. Guard what's inside, keep out what doesn't belong and walk the line often enough to know where it's weak.
Fences need maintenance
Right now we're in the middle of redoing the fences on our land. Some posts are rotted through, some wire is tangled up in brush and a good bit of it has to be rebuilt before anything can safely live inside it.
Life gets that way too. Boundaries break down, old habits creep back and things we used to guard start slipping. Fixing it takes intention. Maybe that's making room to rest. Maybe it's setting limits with people or projects that drain you every time. Maybe it's just saying no so you can protect what matters most.
Jesus walked His own fence lines
Jesus stepped away from the crowds to pray. He didn't let everybody's demands set His pace. He knew when to say yes, when to say no and when to rest. If He needed that rhythm, I definitely do. Boundaries are really about stewardship. They remind you what's been trusted to you and what was never yours to carry.
Walk the line
Every so often I like to walk the property. It helps me think, and it reminds me that peace doesn't come from having more ground. It comes from taking care of the ground you've got. I think God invites us to do the same with our lives. Take a slow walk around your heart, your family and your faith and check the lines. Do it out of gratitude, because what He's given you is worth protecting.
Field note
Healthy boundaries give peace room to grow. Walk your fence lines often and take good care of what's inside them.
